In 1906 the Electric Tram Society of Como (STEC) started operate a passenger transport system for the regional areas of Como. The tram network used to link San Giovanni FS Station and Brunate’s funicular.
In 1908 another public transports company, the Electric Alessandro Volta Society of Como (SECAV), acquired the right to manage the STEC. In a few years the tram network expanded the existing lines and acquired additional lines reaching in this way Maslianico, Ponte Chiasso, Cantù-Asnago FS, Mozzate, Lecco other than the urban lines for viale Varese – San Rocco and San Martino.
In 1934 the STECAV went through a first transformation and the tram networks between Cantù midtown and Cantù-Asnago FS and between Appiano Gentile and Mozzate were substituted by bus lines.
In 1938 started the implementation of the trolley lines of Como-Maslianico and Como-Ponte Chiasso.
In 1947 the new Como-Camerlata trolley line became operational.
By the end of 1955 trolley lines (Cantù) and bus lines (Appiano Gentile and Lecco) permanently replaced the remaining tram lines.
In 1956 we assisted to the maximum expansion of the trolley line: 28 km.
In ’60 the STECAV was the only operator of urban lines in Como department (except for the Civiglio line belonging to SALVI) and decided to develop the public service. That’s why in 1964 the trolley line San Martino was substituted by a circular bus line.
In July 1971 the society had a new plan named “Yellow Bus” that aimed to raise the urban public transports. Breccia/Albate and Ponte Chiasso were so connected by a mixed service of trolley and bus lines.
In April 1974 extra urban and urban services were separated into two different companies. The first one was STECAV which maintained the operation of extra urban lines along with Como-Maslianico and Como-Cantù trolley lines as well as Appiano Gentile and Lecco bus lines. The other one was the newly-created Transport Company of Como (ACT) which on April 1st 1974 started its operations with 6 urban bus lines and the property of SALVI Society.
1977 was a year of radical changes because the ACPT (Consortium Public transports Company) was founded. The ACPT was created in order to bring up again a failing public transits service. On September 25th 1977 the ACPT acquired both urban SALVI lines from ACT and extra urban lines from STECAV. Even the last trolley line Como-Cantù was transformed into a bus line in June 1978. . Newest bus belonged to ACPT while the only trolleybuses remaining operative were the Alfa Romeo 140AF and the Fiat 668 up until to the end of Como-Cantù line.
In 1989 ACT and ACPT merged and on February 23rd 1989 founded the PUBLIC TRANSPORTS SOCIETY (SPT) spa with a social capital of 300 millions splitted between Como Province, the Provincial Public transports Consortium and, since 1998 ( year of creation of this new Province) Lecco Province.
On June 1st 1991 the company started the activity on ACPT and ACT’s lines and vehicles.
In 1999 the Peroni D’Erba was acquired too.
The Regional law 22/1998, later integrated with the Regional law 1/2002, gave birth to a new operative scenery for public transport services. Following the above law and in order to participate to a tender of transport lines, on February 27th 2002 a new society was created to manage public transports.
On January 1st 2003 the SPT Line S.r.l was founded, aimed to manage the public transport services while SPT kept the real estates, warehouses, hire services and tourist line services property.
Since July 1st 2005, the Temporary Association of company (ATI) between SPT LINE S.r.l. and ATM Spa who won the tender, operated the public transport services in Como district and its urban lines.
SPT LINEA Srl managed the whole bus service (12 lines) while ATM led the Como-Brunate’s funicular.
On June 9th 2006 the ATI was transformed into Co.Mo. Fun&Bus Scarl that runs the service contract with Como municipality.
Since July 1st 2005 SPT LINEA Srl looked after about 84% of the extra urban service in Como Province while FNMA had the remaining 16%.
On October 26th 2005 the STECAV Scarl “ Extra urban Consortium Alessandro Volta Transport Society” was set up and it managed the contract of service of Como Province.
Moreover SPT LINEA also managed the 2 international lines: Como – (Ponte Chiasso) – Chiasso and Porlezza – Lugano.
On September 11th 2007 SPT LINEA sold 49% of the social capital to Omnibus Partecipation Society, formed by ARRIVA ITALIA and FERROVIE NORD Spa changing its name from SPT LINEA to ASF Autolinee Srl.
The nowadays social capital is € 7.460.785,00.
